She stood a distance away, silently watching the boy who leaned against the bag racks alone, content to have his earphones accompany him. Emotion underlay her piercing blue eyes as she put a slim pale hand over her mouth to cover her face. It had been so easy back then to laugh, to be yourself but it was different now. The blur of memories that had replayed itself in her head just a few seconds ago vanished and was was replaced with a feeling of loss. Her heart felt heavy, reminicising the past had been painful, more painful than she'd imagined. It was impossible to pretend there was nothing between them, her and that boy. His lean figure was propped casually against the bag racks, a little too casual as he stared intently at his ipod. There was a frosty atmosphere in the air and the silence was awkward.
Students streamed pass the girl and the guy but both seemed unaware, it seemed like they were stuck in a time bubble alone, separate from the rest of the world. The girl, brushing a strand of light brown hair from her face bit her lip and looked down. It was so hard to contain the emotions. Why? she wanted to ask. Why are we like this now? Why did we have to drift apart? But no, she wasn't going to talk to him first, it'd be too shameful. Her heart hammered painfully in her chest. It was hard to admit it, yes she did miss him somehow. Normally she wasn't very good at displaying emotions but it felt pointless now to deny the feeling that something was missing. It had been two years ago when everything was perfect. She could still imagine their smilling faces, her and Jace, no Jonathan. It seemed strange to call him by his nickname now. Everything had been great, days spent with him always seemed cheerful and friendship with him was so easy, like breathing. It was pretty corny to say this but it did seem to feel like that back then.
Her eyes traced his bronzed skin, his tall lean figure, his angular face and his deepset green eyes. His face was cold, indifferent maybe and that hurt her. A emotion stirred inside her chest, something rose up inside her throat and now all she wanted to do was run, to get away from reality, to get away from him. It seemed like the walls she'd built up around herself always got knocked away when she saw him. She was vulnerable, standing there it felt like she was baring herself to be shot. Turning on her heels, she forced her stiff legs to move as she walked away, her pale slender legs somehow graceful. The thought of starting a conversation with him sent her heart hurtling at 50 kilometres per hour, breathing seemed impossible. Rounding the corner, she leaned against the cold wall, closing her almond shaped eyes and letting out a breath. Letting out a sigh, she slid slowly to the floor, her eyes staring sadly into space. How? How had they managed to turn from good friends to perfect strangers?
